I just thought I’d show y’all what music looks like. This is a photo of Sam Cooke, legend, trail blazer and iconic talent. His voice and music were not complicated. They were unadulterated, ungarnished and incomparable. To compose and sing lyrics and songs so simple and smooth one has to just “get it” and “it” came easily to him. Every time I listen to him I feel a renewed sense of confidence in music. I remember reading a story included on the CD insert to one of his greatest hits albums. It told of Cooke in the music studio listening to an up and coming artist. The young man was very attractive and Cooke listened to him. Everyone in the room was impressed but Cooke insisted they all turn their backs to the young man and listen to him again. It was an act of profound integrity. Music isn’t about the “show” or a “look”, it’s about the sound. The good looking young man wasn’t half as impressive without his visual presence. I wish today’s music industry had half this amount of integrity. Listen and enjoy!
